The Temple of God
HUMAN BEINGS ARE MEANT TO BE the living temples of God. At the creation of man God injected a special element of His Spirit that endows the human mind with divine qualities, such as love, creativity, and the desire for the eternal. God wants to make His home in human beings. With the Spirit of God resonating with the mind, the body sees, hears and acts as God would see, hear and act. By thus acting on behalf of the formless and invisible God, human beings are sanctified, and through them God is able to sanctify others.
In Hinduism and other eastern faiths, this indwelling presence of Ultimate Reality is called the Self or Atman. However, most people live in ignorance of the Self, and they live entirely from egoistic motives. To misconstrue the personal ego as the Holy Spirit would be a serious error and even a mark of insanity. For Father Moon, we are like temples that suffered desecration due to the tragedy of the human fall. God’s Spirit cannot dwell in fallen people. Originally, Adam and Eve were to become temples of God and act as God’s earthly body to beautify this world and transform it into a Garden of Eden. Jesus came as God’s temple; therefore he could reveal God in his person. Through God’s grace and human efforts at restoration, we too can attain the position of God’s temples.
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
1 Corinthians 3.16
Paul’s letter. The spirit of God dwells in us if we do good deeds. And he cannot dwell in us if we do evil acts.
Let a man always consider himself as if the Holy One dwells within him.
Talmud, Ta’anit 11b (Judaism)
It is an affirmation, almost a command.
What does the temple of God mean? Just by acknowledging that we are the temple of God, we will act differently. We will respect our body, not do bad deeds, and respect others who are also temples of God. The temple is sacred.
Be like God : he is love, therefore love people. He gave us the capability to differentiate good and evil, therefore we must act in a good manner.
Nevertheless, will man be able to become the temple of God ? If God has created us with that desire, than it is not live in an evil world for eternity. And inevitably, it will be possible to go back to God. God loves us no matter what. Mistakes are human but we must acknowledge them and try to change.
Through the Grace of God and human effort, we can achieve the temple of God. Both are essential.
I cannot do good, but my faith saves me.
Catholics said that we are saved through our faith and deeds. The protestant says that we are saved by our faith that does good deeds. Both are essential because human beings also have a responsibility. A little effort to go back brings us salvation.
Even if we put ourselves in a position of perfection, it is possible to do bad deeds. Nevertheless it is still possible to reconnect or go back to God. The mistakes will not take away from us the chance to go back to our original position.
As a parent we can understand God’s Relationship with us. If the child does not come, we cannot do anything as a parent. But if the child comes and apologizes can we embrace.
In Africa, you are not allowed to make any mistakes. Forgiveness does not exist. Everything is squared. There is no possibility to do things another way. If the priests command to do a certain way, the followers have to go that path. Nevertheless, in order to understand God, we must question ourselves. But it is essential to see God the way Jesus taught us. As a parent, close to us, not as a king far in the clouds.
New teachings touch every religions open to a new message. We cannot consider another religion as null.
The whole world evolves. In Africa, some priests put themselves on a pedestal. They use the misery and fear of people to proclaim to be the intermediate to connect to God. The problem is people than go to the other extreme and deny God. This was the same case with Catholics with the indulgences. People are being used through their ignorance. Jesus did not do this, he put himself on the same level as others.
Some people think if they are not baptized, they will go to hell. It is a brainwashing.
Jesus spoke in paraboles. If we take things litteraly, we cannot understand his teachings. We must understand his words in spirit and Truth.
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.3
Some people say that Paul was crucified upside down.
It is the spirit of the Christ that makes me live. The condition to have this same spirit is by going through the same path as Jesus. In order to be one with God, we must love our enemy and live for others.
Although Jesus did good deeds, persecuted. When we go through the same difficulties, then we can understand and become one with his spirit.
The love of the Christ lives in me.
Christ is not a being but a mission, a concept.
Although Jesus was crucified, we can still see the good consequences of his venue, and the good things that we have now thanks to him. Otherwise, there would be only evil reigning on the earth.
Heaven and earth contain Me not, but the heart of my faithful servant contains Me.
Hadith of Suhrawardi (Islam)
God created humanity and the world, but the love he has for us is bigger than for the whole creation. He wants to live in us.
Just as God fills the whole world, so the soul fills the body. Just as God sees but is not seen, so the soul sees but is not itself seen. Just as God feeds the whole world, so the soul feeds the whole body. Just as God is pure, so the soul is pure. Just as God dwells in the innermost precincts [of the Temple], so also the soul dwells in the innermost part of the body.
Talmud, Berakot 10a (Judaism)
The Jewish People had to build the temple, which was in two parts, one of which held the precious items.
It is like our soul is a part of God, which we find in ourselves.
When I love him, I am his hearing by which he hears, his sight by which he sees, his hand by which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks.
40 Hadith of an-Nawawi 38 (Islam)
There is a condition of having to love God here. Once we love God we can use our body as God.
I once realized that God is not above us watching us all, but is watching through our eyes.
I have breathed into man of My spirit.
The LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest, this Self forever dwells within the hearts of all. When a man is free from desire, his mind and senses purified, he beholds the glory of the Self and is without sorrow.
Though seated, he travels far; though at rest, he moves all things. Who but the purest of the pure can realize this Effulgent Being, who is joy and who is beyond joy.
Formless is he, though inhabiting form. In the midst of the fleeting he abides forever. All-pervading and supreme is the Self. The wise man, knowing him in his true nature, transcends all grief.
Katha Upanishad 1.2.20-22 (Hinduism)
Bright but hidden, the Self dwells in the heart. Everything that moves, breathes, opens, and closes lives in the Self. He is the source of love and may be known through love but not through thought. He is the goal of life. Attain this goal!
The shining Self dwells hidden in the heart. Everything in the cosmos, great and small, lives in the Self. He is the source of life, truth beyond the transience of this world. He is the goal of life. Attain this goal!
Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.1-2 (Hinduism)
It is interesting that He can be known by love but not by thought. We can understand him through our heart. He contacts us through our heart, not our head.
It is the goal of our lives to reach this love of God.
The rich build temples to Shiva, What shall I, a poor man, do? O my Lord! my legs are the pillars, My torso, the shrine, And my head, the golden pinnacle! Things standing shall fall, But the moving ever shall stay!4
Basavanna, Vacana 820 (Hinduism)
The building is not so important; it is the temple we build in ourselves which is important and which will live on while buildings may fall.
Abdullah bin Omar saw the Messenger (PBUH) walking around the Ka’ba saying, “How blessed you are, O Ka’ba, and your fragrant wind. How great, how great is your sacredness! By Allah, owner of my soul, to Allah the sacredness of a believer has greater holiness than you.”
Sunnan Ibn Majah5 2.3932 (Islam)
PBUH means peace be upon him, which is said after mentioning Mohammed.
It is more important to become the Temple of God than to build one.
Man was also in the beginning with God. Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be. All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself, as all intelligence also; otherwise there is no existence.
Behold, here is the agency of man, and here is the condemnation of man; because that which was from the beginning is plainly manifest unto them, and they receive not the light. And every man whose spirit receives not the light is under condemnation.
For man is spirit. The elements are eternal, and spirit and element, inseparably connected, receive a fullness of joy; and when separated, man cannot receive a fullness of joy. The elements are the tabernacle of God; yea, man is the tabernacle of God, even temples; and whatsoever temple is defiled, God shall destroy that temple.6
Doctrine and Covenants 93.29-35 (Latter-day Saints)
Human beings made if not totally one with god not tabernacle. If tabernacle is stained, God will destroy it, but is more of an selfdestruction. If we are not disconnected, we can feel joy.
Why not say that God will destroy it? Because as a parent, God will not want to kill his children. That is why death sentences are unthinkable. He is love and loves everyone, even a murderer. But would not that mean that we are not blessed by God but by our own good deeds? God does not destroy us but desires to destroy evil in us. It is the God of the new testament, not the God destroyer and judge of the old testament.
There is the execution to correct the criminal or the execution for vengeance. But even to correct, the death sentence is not credible. Because errors have been caused. Some evangelic churches in the USA are promoting executions. But as Christians, we should not allow this because it is not love, not forgiveness, not according to what Jesus has taught us. We must be merciful according to Jesus’ words.
We must prevent things from happen, by stopping violence. Even imprisonment does not always bring education or possibility to change. It must bring forgiveness and love to the criminal.
Teachings of Sun Myung Moon
A human being is a temple of God, and inside that temple dwells a mind which is a microcosm of the infinite God. (107:172, April 27, 1980)
Each human being is like a microcosm. Like a facet of the infinite God. Therefore, all the elements must be in harmony to be one with God. Just like in a family, each member has a different character, and if they can be united in harmony, they can become one centered on God.
I was once arrested with a policeman, and was put into jail for no reason and proves because of racism, although I was not guilty.
It is “crazy” how imprisonment is like a punishment and not correction.
First Corinthians 3:16 says: “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” If you enter into a deep mystical state, you will recognize this to be true. If you ask, “Heavenly Father, where are you?” God will answer you from the original root of your mind. (362:190, December 12, 2001)
What is difficult to understand is the fact that we are all a element of God and that we must unite. And not each person a “God”.
We actually all are an image of God, but we must unite in harmony in order to build the complete image of God. We represent God in a different way because we are all different. The image of God is therefore very vast. By creating links with people from different cultures and nations, we can understand an other side of God.
Meditation helps to put us more in the present where we can sense more. It helps us to unite our minds and bodes. This is the same goal as saying the 5 prayers per day in Islam.
As written in I Corinthians 3:16, Adam and Eve were created as the dwelling place of God, as holy temples. What of God was to dwell within them? God’s love was to dwell within those holy temples.
As God’s temples [had they not fallen], Adam and Eve would be God’s body. When they loved each other, it would be God loving through them as His body. This is the secret of the universe. (161:44, January 1, 1987)
Had there been no Fall, God would be dwelling in our hearts and we would be His temples... Our faces would express God’s pure joy. We would see things with God’s eyes and for God’s sake; we would listen with God’s ears and for God’s sake; we would feel with God’s touch for God’s sake; we would speak on God’s behalf, and so on. Everything we did and thought would be an expression of the living God inside us. (95:247, December 4, 1977)
Through the restoration, we can go back to this stage. But there are also moments in our life when we achieve this position. When we admire a flower, we can feel God’s joy. But if we are disconnected from God, we are dead inside.
The beauty of nature is magnifying it cannot be reconstituted by men.
We feel spiritually when we are one with God. Our cells vibrate and our mind and body are united as one.
There are also things we say that come directly from God. When we read good Words, we are spiritually influenced and can be connected with God.
Hypocrisy is terrible in our society. If we start to judge from the same wrong deeds as I does, and don’t recognize our own mistakes. It is like in Jesus’ time, the people persecuted Jesus for things they did.
Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, God has been hoping to find men and women who could empathize with God’s heart, be united in God’s heart, and be the temples in which God can dwell. (3:298, January 26, 1958)
It is God who is hoping to find people with whom he can live within. God is in each of us but not all of us can feel him and allow him to reach us. Jesus said if you see me you see God. Jesus couldn’t help but behave like he did in the temple.
It is difficult to understand how loving Jesus brings “salvation”. There are people who say they they love Jesus but cannot love the people around them! If there many people who teach math, but only one who teaches correctly you must go to this teacher. In the same way Jesus is the only example and we should go to him and learn from him.
Jesus’ mind and body were not simply his own. His mind was the mind of God. His body was not his, but God’s. Also, Jesus’ words were not his own, but were the law of Heaven, representing God’s Will and the hope of all humankind. Jesus came to this earth as God’s substantial temple, as the divine Word, and as the representative who could sit on God’s throne. (3:264, January 12, 1958)
This was said in 1958 (60 years). Sun Myung Moon has respected Jesus. He has met him on Easter Monday while praying. Jesus appeared to him and asked him to continue his mission, to build the kingdom of God on earth and in heaven. He studied the truth about God and Jesus. He declared that Jesus was not meant to die on the cross. He was to become a True Parent and bring down the sufferings on earth. Nevertheless, he was not accepted and crucified because of dogmas. Sun Myung Moon was also persecuted for the Truth he brought on earth.
Would we have accepted Jesus?
Can we accept that Sun Myung Moon had to continue the mission? It is not the words of human beings that made you believe that Jesus was the messiah, it is the Holy Spirit. Still now, Jesus is not the messiah for the Jews. Sun Myung Moon wanted to bring a new truth and to erase ignorance to bring back humankind to God.
People though that Jesus wanted to change the Judaism. If people had not been offended by Jesus’ words, the truth could have been spread. Nevertheless, he was seen as the devil Belzebuth. Those who could accept him were those who didn’t have any concept or dogmas, the illiterate.
You will recognize them by their fruits.
The relationship between God and a person who has attained individual perfection can be compared to that between the mind and the body. The body is the dwelling place of the mind and moves according to the mind’s direction. Likewise, God abides within the mind of a fully mature person. Such a person becomes a temple of God and leads his life in harmony with His Will. A perfect individual is fully attuned to God, just as the body resonates with the mind. For this reason it is written, “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (I Cor. 3.16) and “In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.” (John 14.20) A person who has perfected his individual character becomes a temple of God, and the Holy Spirit abides within him. Living in oneness with God, he acquires a divine nature. (Exposition of the Divine Principle, Eschatology 1.1.1)
On have to become a perfect person to fully understand God. If you are not mature it is difficult to understand God.
When you go to bed and your head is snuggled into the pillow, have you ever thought, “Ah, I am sleeping with God”? Have you ever thought, “I feel so good that God is sleeping next to me”? And then in the morning as you wake up and get out of bed, do you say to yourself, “Wake up, God! Oh, You are already awake. Good morning, Father”? You should live with the feeling that when you wake up, God is already awake, ready to greet you. (92:153, April 1, 1977)
A beautiful paragraph. When we wake up, God is already there. Sometimes we pray without actually thinking that God is right there.
Each human being can contain the entire universe. Therefore, prepare a space within yourself where God can come and take a nap, comfortably stretching His legs. Become a person within whom God can feel completely free. Though he kicks and stretches, he feels no walls or obstructions. If you are like that, you can be God’s temple.
Knowing this, you should love yourself and respect yourself as the temple of God that you are. (125:101, March 13, 1983)
It is not just loving others but also loving and respecting ourselves, This causes many problems for people.
A human being has a body and a definite shape, while the invisible God has no shape or body. However, without having a body, God cannot reign over the spiritual and physical worlds. God also needs a substantial body in order to manifest as the Parent of humankind. God created Adam and Eve to manifest Himself through these substantial beings.
Thus, unfallen Adam and Eve were not only to be the progenitors of the human race; they were also to be God’s substantial body through which He could reign over heaven and earth. They were responsible to exercise dominion over the world on behalf of God in the position of parents. (133:9192, July 10, 1984)
Human beings have a physical form, unlike God. He needs to dwell within us in order to see. As Adam and Even fell he could not do this so he is working through us to be a parent to the whole world. It is this which we are working to attain; to become people who God can experience the world through.
God has no shape or form. Even in the spirit world, you cannot see God. The reason why God created Adam centering on love is because this created world around us has form. [Through Adam], God was to become a Father with a form.
As a result of God becoming a Father possessing form, that which is invisible and that which is visible are united into one. This, in turn, symbolizes the unity of the universe. Thus, God created Adam and Eve so that He could take on form. So, what is the decisive element in His taking on form? This can only be love. Adam and Eve came into the world with an appearance such that they could have a form resembling God’s external aspect.
In that case, the features of Adam and Eve would have been elevated to the palace and the throne of the Kingdom of Heaven. God would have then dwelt within the hearts of this king and queen, and from there He would have ruled over the physical world and the invisible world. This would have created God’s Kingdom—a kingdom of love. Only love can bring spirit and flesh together. Nothing else will suffice. (143:93-94, March 16, 1986)
Even is the spirit world we cannot see God. We can feel his presence but not see him. The one who sees God will die because he won’t be able to see anymore. Moses wanted to see God, but God said I am only light and you cannot see me. We saw Christ in flesh so we can see him, but we can only feel God.
It is good that he can see us! And also that he can hear us, so he can answers our prayers. Sometimes we have nightmares and then wake up suddenly. It was God who wakes you up and saves you!
If we see only God in everyone then we would love everyone. It is like when Jacob saw Esau- When I see you I see the face of God. Then they could embrace.
In fact, God created us to represent him on the earth. It is a pity about Adam and Eve and all the bad things humans now do, as we are supposed to be his representatives.
The person who does not love his neighbor does not love God as we cannot see God.
We need to reform the UN with our connection there. They are voting on things without understanding the Spiritual side of things. We are a the country where we are very safe. We have so much water in our bodies- we are so blessed. We need to share this. It is a tiny country but we need to be able to share what we have. If you look on social media, you ask yourself where is the world heading?
We need to teach spiritual values to our children but not all schools teach about God and about right and wrong. Children will not know the meaning of life.
We need to continue doing this (sharing) but at the same time there are people who know these things who do not put it in action. This is a big problem. The few who come here and share, if we can act on this and do good in our lives that is already a start. We learn a lot here.
We shouldn’t lose hope! We will get there. Where there is a will there is a way. Shall we take a picture of our determination!
